TWO EYES, TWO DR. GULANI SURGERIES EQUALS 20/20 VISION
That’s the simple and most fortunate outcome from my perspective. However, some additional details are fascinating and may be of help to others.
As medical advancements take place, such as the introduction of new tools and techniques, some patients may fall into a gap. That is to say their provider is not perhaps equipped, trained, experienced, and hey, in some cases they may not even be aware of breakthrough methods and outcomes.
In my case there were multiple challenges to the success of the desired refractive lens exchange surgeries.
- Glaucoma that I have been dealing with for a 23 years.
- A laser burn of the optic nerve by a doctor with a bad aim and a new toy approximately 20 years ago.
- Hanging complex cataracts (rather risky, a lot can go wrong.)
- Undilating pupils. (You put the juice to them and they only dilate a little and for a short time.)
- Nystagmus, “yes, I have that too”. A condition where the eye moves involuntary moves or drifts from a fixed position. (A surgeon’s nightmare).
These conditions, especially in summary, made me a poor candidate for the general cookie cutter standard procedures.
But then there is Dr. Gulani Vision Institute, and then there’s Tom (myself) with no more glasses, SWEET!! I hated those smudge suckers.
I got some insight on how Dr. Gulani does these surgeries, so that people travel from far reaching parts of the world just to see him. One, I ask a lot of questions, and two, he is very transparent. He is so passionate about his science, that if you engage him you will see a slightly distant gaze, and then he will proclaim with a slap to his left bicep, “Tom, every patient is different, you must look at each of the differences unique to each patient and make your game plan accordingly, that’s how you achieve the best possible outcome, not just a good outcome, the best outcome for each patient. Did I mention he’s passionate?
