Last October I contracted acanthamoeba in both my eyes with the right eye being hit harder. After seeing four ophthalmologists I finally received a diagnosis at Bascom Palmer eye institute. Following 8 months of eye drops around the clock from 30 minutes to every 1.5 hours, the amoeba was eliminated but I was left with a blinding corneal scar.
Despite being a US world report Number one institution in the USA, they did not offer any options besides corneal transplant
I was then treated by the head of ophthalmologic department at the University of Florida. After finishing medication, I told her that my goal was to be able to see without glasses or the need for contacts. She said she couldn’t do anything and knew of no one that could help me. By this time, I was legally blind in my right eye. I couldn’t see anything, not even my fingernails. It was difficult adjusting to that change and acknowledging that I couldn’t see very well.
She then said she knew of one person/doctor that could promise my desired goal and referred me to Dr.Gulani. After my initial meeting, I felt confident and shocked that Dr. Gulani said he could help with my vision. The surgery was so fast, painless, only 4 minutes, that was the most shocking. That a surgery lasting only 4 minutes could change my life and how I was able to view the world. I’m excited for my newly found vision and I hope to become a physician too. Maybe an ophthalmologist that has used Dr. Gulani’s revolutionary techniques in medical school in the coming years.
I will most definitely recommend others to seek other opinions before corneal transplant. Dr. Gulani might change their life like he has mine.
