Dr. Gulani has been correcting astigmatism from mild, to moderate, to severe, including those with irregular astigmatism for over three decades. With his full spectrum, custom designed approach to cure astigmatism, he can correct astigmatism glasses and contact lenses. Learn more about astigmatism tests, astigmatism symptoms, causes of astigmatism and astigmatism surgery options using break through techniques he performs with a desire to correct astigmatism permanently.

What is Astigmatism?

Just like a camera, the eye has a cornea (viewfinder), the shape of which decides vision. Astigmatic corneas are shaped like a football (oval) as opposed to being shaped like a basketball (spherical). In a perfectly round cornea the light that enters the eye bends evenly to create a clear image. If the eye is shaped more like a football the light is bent more in one direction than others.

In this continued desire to steer colleagues away from “cookie-cutter” surgery, he has given birth to KLEAR™ which involves over 40 techniques and infinite permutations to help people see without glasses by using breakthrough technologies (including Lasers, Lens Implants, etc.) singly and in sequence using GPS™ therewith custom-tailoring surgery to each patient’s eyes to even aim for vision beyond 20/20.

Though you might have been diagnosed with Astigmatism previously, Dr.Gulani dives deeper in his desire to determine “What Kind of Astigmatism.” Like other vision errors/refractive errors (glasses prescription/ contact lens prescription), Astigmatism could be first classified as:

diagram of an eye with astigmatism
  1. Mild
  2. Moderate
  3. Extreme

Further, he classifies Astigmatism to be:

  1. Corneal (due to football shape of your cornea)
  2. Lenticular (due to shape of your natural crystalline lens)

Based on direction and axis of your steep meridian (think shorter curve of your football shaped cornea) you could have:

  1.  Astigmatism “With the Rule” with the steep axis being at 90°
  2.  Astigmatism “Against the Rule” with the steep axis being towards 180°. In Dr.Gulani’s experience, Astigmatism “against the rule” could often be a corneal pathology (abnormal cornea)

Additionally, based on how smooth or distorted your astigmatism is, he further breaks it down into:

  1. Regular (smooth and mostly normal)
  2. Irregular astigmatism ( most commonly due to corneal pathology or post-surgical abnormality)

What are the Symptoms of Astigmatism?

People with astigmatism often have blurred vision which can be associated with fatigue, and eyestrain. Astigmatism is a condition that most people are born with however other causes of astigmatism are eye injury, eye disease, or Lasik or corneal surgery complications.

In majority of cases, the shape of the cornea decides vision. There are two main types of astigmatism that often occur (with the rule and against the rule depending on the axis) with myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness). Nearsighted corneas are steep or more curved, farsighted corneas are flatter and astigmatic corneas are shaped like an American football (oval) as opposed to being shaped like a basketball (spherical).

Astigmatism may therefore occur in combination with other refractive errors, like nearsightedness (Myopia) or Farsightedness (Hyperopia) and even Presbyopia (After 40 reading glasses0. Also, cataracts can have astigmatism associated with poor vision.

Except for El Greco’s success with his paintings (which today we understand resulted from his Astigmatism), most people we have seen with astigmatism usually suffer in their work and life. So we would suggest that you do seek correction.

What are the Causes of Astigmatism?

Most commonly, astigmatism is an inherited refractive (glasses prescription) vision disorder, but it can also be acquired following surgical complications (LASIK, SMILE, PRK, etc.) besides being the end result of a corneal infection (most likely from contact lenses), inflammation, dystrophy, or trauma.

How Common is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism by itself a vision disorder is commonly seen in one fourth to one third of the world’s population and more importantly is often associated with nearsightedness, farsightedness, presbyopia, keratoconus, and even cataracts. Hence, Dr. Gulani when correcting these vision disorders (glasses and contact lens prescriptions) makes it a point to correct the associated astigmatism too and teaches his concept of “Zero Toric (Astigmatism) Tolerance!” worldwide.
