A dream come true after 50 years!

The last eye appointment I had was with my providers low vision clinic. After an evaluation with the Doctor their recommendation was to have me labeled as legally blind.
In the early 1970’s I had cataract surgery in both eyes. The surgery in the right eye was successful however the surgery in the left eye was not successful due to acute glaucoma leaving me with no useable vision in the left eye. In 2016 my right eye developed Fuch’s Dystrophy resulting in the loss of vision in my one functioning eye.

I believe due to my age and monocular vision no Doctor offered any solution to my vision in either eye.

Our neighbor who had severe corneal issues suggested we meet Dr. Gulani who was able to help him. Ten years later he still is able to play softball and golf without the need of corrective lenses.
I first met with Dr. Gulani in the fall of 2019. At that meeting he suggested that the non functioning left could attain some vision with the removal old scar tissue, 100’s of floaters and the insertion of an IOL. This process did gain vision in the left eye after 50 years. Once the left eye had healed the same procedure was performed in the one functioning eye (right eye).

When the right fully healed Dr. Gulani performed a corneal transplant into the right eye. Using a gas bubble to hold it in place. This procedure presented several challenges due to previous eye surgeries (cataract, detached retina on the macula, vitrectomy). These surgeries left me with many holes in the iris making it complicated to have the transplant to stay in place. Being an optician for 50 years I was familiar with many of these complications and procedures.

Nine days post my vision in the right eye has improved from 20/150 to 20/70. Continued improvement is expected during this healing period.
